In January 2013, we did a two-night backpacking trip in this very remote area in New Mexico to see those amazing rock formations. It was lightly snow-covered. Temperature was about 6F at night. There is no water in this area. You can hike 1 to 2 miles before setting up tent; then spend days to explore this area.
It is hard to navigate because there is no designated trail in this area and the surroundings are all small hills that look similar. If you are into taking landscape photos, most likely you would stay late. Then a GPS is a must-have; otherwise, it is impossible to find the way back to your tent at night.
