We summited University Peak on Sep 22, 2019. The 360 degree view on top was worth every bit of effort. We started from Kearsarge Lake trailhead, camped at the small lake at elevation 11400 feet right under the University Peak, then summited on next day.
Here are a few tips for you to prepare this climb. Shortly after pass Gibert Lake, there is a sign on the trail pointing to Matlock Lake. Follow the well maintained trail to Matlock Lake. After that there will be no trail.
The lake 11400 is not only close to the summit but also offers some nice views at sunrise. At the south west side of the lake, there is a small sandy beach. I highly recommend to camp there. Note that an important tip is to start to summit from there as it is a lot easier to follow the slope from the south west side of the lake.
We summited from the north east ridge on the top. The ascend involved both class 2 and 3 climbing and it was hard. Reading online, I believe an easier route is from the east ridge close to the summit. But when we were there, it was covered by snow.
